What Is Phantom Load

Phantom is a scary word. It conjures images of vampires, ghosts, and goblins roaming the streets at night.

Do you know what’s even scarier than vampires and ghosts? Phantom load! [Imagine ominous horror film music ringing through your ears!]

Okay, maybe phantom load isn’t as scary as things that go bump in the night, but it is dangerous and must be stopped! So, what is phantom load and what is it doing to your energy bill? Let’s discuss!

What is Phantom Load?

Phantom load is also known as vampire power. (See, we told you it was scary). It’s the electricity consumed by an electronic device while it is in standby mode or turned off. Most people assume that when they power down their devices, they’re saving energy and stopping the electric meter from running on that particular device. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case.

Let’s look at how phantom load works and how to reduce it.

Phantom Energy Loss

As we all know, energy bills are a part of life unless we decide to go off the grid and embrace yurt living.

Since most of us still live in houses and apartments, we receive monthly electricity bills that seem to be getting higher by the month. Especially since most of us are working AND living in our homes nowadays.

According to Save on Energy, energy bills in the United States increased by an average of 10% in 2021. In certain pockets, energy bills increased as much as 50%. That’s a substantial rise, especially given the average increase from 2020 to 2021 was only 5.4% (US Bureau of Labor Statistics).

With electricity costs on the rise, it’s essential to make energy conservation easier and more efficient for everyone. While doing things like flipping light switches off as you leave rooms or turning the TV off after binging The Office is helpful, these habits aren’t enough anymore.

At the beginning of 2022, the U.S. Energy Information Administration announced that electricity prices are rising due to increased gas prices. While our team at ReVert Technologies can’t do anything about gas prices, we do know how to save you money and help preserve our earth’s precious resources.

Phantom load continues to cost you money even when you power down most of your devices. For example, closing your laptop doesn’t stop the flow of electricity to your device; it only puts it in standby mode. Similarly, when you turn the power off to your TV, it’s still drawing electricity from the outlet.

Here’s a list of common devices that are steadily pulling energy from your outlets even though you may only be using them for 1-2 hours a day:

  • Televisions
  • Surround sound systems
  • Stereo equipment
  • Gaming consoles
  • Computers
  • Printers
  • Cell phone chargers
  • Battery chargers

This list could go on to mention another 50-100 devices in your home.

How to Reduce Phantom Load

Until recently, the only way to be sure your appliances were not leeching energy through phantom load was to unplug them.

Can you imagine having to make the rounds every evening to unplug your televisions, cable boxes, coffee makers, microwaves, and cell phone chargers? Not only would that routine add another item to your long list of daily to-dos, but, frankly, it’s hard to remember to unplug everything all the time. Plus, you’re failing to reduce your carbon footprint any time you forget.

Furthermore, our devices provide conveniences to which we have grown accustomed. Our microwaves, for example, are set to tell us what time it is. Our coffeepots are set to start the coffee for us before we even stumble out of bed. These conveniences are nice but are they worth the energy waste they’re causing or the amount of money you’re paying for your electric bills?

Our solution to the problem of phantom load is the Teak Smart Power Cube

Our Solution to Phantom Load

teak smart power cube

Our smart power cube reduces phantom load from draining your electricity and your wallet. When you plug your devices into the power cube, you control when energy flows to your device and when it doesn’t.

As you use various devices, our AI will learn when you power each device on or off and ask for your permission to remove the residual phantom load when detected. If you grant it permission, the outlet stops wasted energy flow, as if you unplugged the device.

Simply set it and forget it.

Now, admit it–you feel safer knowing the Teak Smart Power Cube is out fighting vampire power and phantom loads, right? We hope you feel safer because we sure do!
